What it Means to be a Nebraska Certified Nursery and Landscape Professional (NCNLP)

The Nebraska Certified Nursery and Landscape Professional (NCNLP) program is more than just a credential - it’s a mark of commitment, expertise, and pride for those working in Nebraska’s green industry. Earning this certification through the Nebraska Nursery and Landscape Association (NNLA) demonstrates a dedication to raising the standards of knowledge and service within the industry.

The NCNLP program was established to elevate the standard of professionalism among nursery and landscape industry members. To become certified, individuals must pass a rigorous three-part exam covering plant identification, landscape design, and the comprehensive NCNLP manual. Each section requires a minimum score of 75% and testing is offered twice a year, providing opportunities for industry professionals to demonstrate their knowledge and dedication.

Katie Naumann, Assistant Liner Grower at Great Plains Nursery, explained “I wanted to become certified to show I am educated on important industry standards and practices. The certification process has given me a solid foundation of knowledge from which I can continue to explore, learn and develop my own skills and interests.”

Beyond the initial certification, NCNLPs maintain their status through ongoing professional development and education. Certified professionals are required to complete five hours of continuing education each year, ensuring they stay current on industry trends, techniques, and innovations. Many fulfill this requirement by attending NNLA’s Winter Conference, Summer Field Day, or various workshops and field sessions. This commitment to continuous learning helps NCNLPs deliver better results for their clients and communities.

For members of the Nebraska Nursery and Landscape Association, certification offers even more benefits: recognition among peers, increased credibility with customers, and a network of fellow professionals dedicated to growing Nebraska’s green industry. As Zoe Gildersleeve, Landscape Designer at Heroes Lawn Care shared, “…Being a part of the association allows for the opportunity to stay connected with other professionals in the field, as well as an opportunity to explore some fun new places during Summer Field Day.”

To those considering becoming certified: take the leap. The NCNLP certification is more than a title - it’s proof of your dedication to your craft and your clients. And for our communities across Nebraska, it means thriving landscapes designed and maintained by true professionals.
